Apple unveils 3 new iPhones (XS, XS Max, and XR) and the Apple Watch Series 4

Apple took the stage at their annual keynote event and unveiled the Apple Watch Series 4 and three new iPhones (XS, XS Max, and XR). Here are the key takeaways from Apple’s big reveal that will be of interest to you:

iPhone XS

This device is the same size as the current iX, but with an upgrade to processing power, 30 minutes more battery life, storage capacity of 64gb, 128gb, 512gb, and a super retina OLED display. The brief snapshot they showed of the internals shows the same layout for the logic board meaning that the repair process will be similar to the iX. The pricing for screens should be in line with that of the IX when it was released.

Reparability Pros: The process based on initial findings appears similar to the iPhone X. Aftermarket OLED technology is beginning to mature due to the iPhone X. The screens should be available for a lower cost an shorter time than that of the iX.

Reparability Cons: The cost of the screen will most likely be high once available and will take some time do decrease.

Reparability Score: 8/10 (1 hard – 10 easy)

iPhone XS Max
This device has the largest display and battery that Apple has ever released for an iPhone. Hardware specs aside from the screen size, battery life, and dual sim capability are all the same as the iXS.

This case is greater on the XS Max than the XS.

Reparability Score: 7/10 (1 hard – 10 easy)

iPhone XR
This is the budget friendly version of the 3 devices released mainly due to the display being LCD based and not OLED. This device also comes in a wider variety of colors (6) than the XS and XS Max. This device should have the screen available first and at a lowest cost than the iXS and iXS Max versions.

Reparability Pros: The process based on initial findings appears similar to the iPhone X. Due to having an LCD based screen, this device will have screens quickest to market at a reasonable price.

Reparability Cons: Initial screen availability

Reparability Score: 9/10 (1 hard – 10 easy)

Apple Watch 4
The main update in the latest version of the Apple watch is in regards to the display and the heartrate sensor. The display is now edge to edge which provides a larger viewing area than the previous versions. The heart rate sensor has been updated as well to collect more data than before including being able to sense heart arrhythmia.

Reparability Pros: The Apple Watch Series 4 appears similar in form factor to the previous versions meaning the repair process should be similar.

Reparability Cons: Apple Watch screens are historically high in cost in most cases being higher than iPhone screens.

Reparability Score: 7/10 (1 hard – 10 easy)

iOS 12
iOS 12 is set to release on 9/18 for the iPhone 5S and newer. This latest iOS version will mainly add features to the newer devices but will improve performance on all. Once this iOS version releases, eTech Parts Plus will test parts across all devices for any potential software related issues. We also anticipate that the release of this iOS version will resolve the auto-brightness issue currently experience on the i8 and i8+ when replacing the screen.
