iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus Drop Tests Prove... They Break!

Today Apple announced its first weekend sales of 10 million new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus models, once again setting a new record for iPhone launch sales! This is a staggering number of new iPhones on the market and creates a lot of potential repair business for the iPhone repair industry. While there was some concern within the Repair Community with rumors of “unbreakable" sapphire glass displays, after seeing all these different torture tests we’re pleased to announce the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are far from unbreakable devices. Apple also revealed their updated out-of-warranty repair costs, showing an increase in repair prices across the board. Now it’s time for eTech Parts' favorite aspect of any new iPhone release… the drop, dunk and torture tests!

The Good

https://youtu.be/7lhXOgJ8ahA Not every iPhone performed poorly in each drop test, including the first iPhone 6 drop test -- which fared well for being the "iPhone drop heard 'round the world."   https://youtu.be/JS8f-hVsDzA Android Authority's drop test shows the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus passing the test with just a couple scuffs on the sides.

The Bad

https://youtu.be/mfeJbKKSRm0 While those iPhones may have gotten by unscathed, Fixpod proves we'll see plenty of broken iPhone 6's in the near future.   https://youtu.be/eGxlm82hWDM This drop test from the guys at PhoneBuff shows screens separating from assemblies following the iPhone's face-plant.   https://youtu.be/_vJZ3PQt118 TechSmartt compares the fragility of the new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus with that of the Samsung Galaxy S5 and HTC One M8.   https://youtu.be/e0SrxkQCJY8 Two passes and a fail from the guys over at RatedRR.

The Ugly

https://youtu.be/0UjmqErytJc While RatedRR's tradition of shooting bullets at new iPhones and iPads has always been my most anticipated torture test, they took it a step further this year with 6 torture tests on 6 iPhones in 6 days!   https://youtu.be/msErUe2eInk RatedRR's 6 Days of Torture continues by answering everyone's biggest question... Will it blend? (Spoiler: the answer is no.)   We can't wait to see what other terrible torture tests RatedRR has in store for this week! After seeing the mixed reviews on each drop test it's clear that regardless of how you drop a device, there are an infinite number of circumstances that go into whether the screen will shatter instantly, or just scuff up the frame. Though it does appear the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus have a little more resistance to shattering than previous iPhone models, the side drops and face-plants featured in these drop tests remind us these are still incredibly fragile devices created from very thin aluminum and glass. We're sure you'll see plenty of broken iPhone 6/6 Plus screens -- and when the time comes, you'll know where you can find iPhone 6 accessories and the highest quality parts for iPhone 6 and parts for iPhone 6 Plus on the market. Luckily online teardowns found both devices are pretty easy to fix when compared to previous iPhone models. Thanks for reading and be sure to subscribe to our blog feed, and follow us on Twitter and Instagram @etechparts for the latest news and updates from the iPhone repair industry.
